Absolutely alone

“What a thing it is to sit absolutely alone,
in the forest, at night, cherished by this
wonderful, unintelligible, perfectly innocent speech,
the most comforting speech in the world,
the talk that rain makes by itself all over the ridges,
and the talk of the watercourses everywhere in the hollows!
Nobody started it, nobody is going to stop it.
It will talk as long as it wants, this rain.
As long as it talks I am going to listen.”

~ Thomas Merton

  1. Oh what a joy it would be to listen to once again be able to listen to rain. In California we’re in our fourth year of drought. It is a constant reminder that rain is a precious gift indeed.

    1. Russ, while you have been experiencing a drought on the Gulf Coast we have had record setting rain and a tropical storm. The sound of rain has be so loud it has been the only sound. A gentle rain would have been preferred. Amazing how extremes bring so differing emotions. Take care, Bill
