To have succeeded

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. One of my favourite quotes and one of my favourite authors. However, that particular quote is one often attributed to Emerson that apparently isn’t his. See http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ralph_Waldo_Emerson for more details. Apparently this inspirational verse by Bessie Stanley appeared in the same book as another verse or poem by Emerson in 1911 and it is now assumed that sometime later someone else wanting to use it and acknowledge the author researched back to the original source and somehow got it wrong; either by looking up the incorrect line in the contents or the incorrect page or whatever and then attributing the original quote to him. Eighty years of greeting cards and inspirational stories later it is still often attributed to him ….. or sometimes to Robert Louis Stevenson …….and it remains one of the most inspirational verses of all times ….whoever it was who originally penned it. Thanks for sharing 🙂
