“The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice there is nothing we can do to change until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds.” ~ R.D. Laing

Thanks for this insight from Ronny Laing and the powerful and beautiful image. What we fail to notice has been uppermost in my mind for some time as I ponder why so many of us seem asleep during much of our so-called waking lives.
People criticise RDL for various things but for me he was a hero because he was prepared to look at himself and others in a different way when the majority live forever in a state brilliantly described by Andersen in the Emperor’s New Clothes.
Laing situated the person within a social context, because ‘mental illness’ does not occur in a vacuum – something that has always seemed so important to me. We are born into, socialised and categorised by our families and the wider society – so the sanity or otherwise of those groupings must necessarily be a factor in our mental issues.
Most stimulating, now I feel really awake…
I first read Laing as an undergraduate and really liked his approach to attempt to unravel the human experiences of psychosis within a humanistic understanding. Thanks for your post. Be well, Bill
Same for me – always great to be inspired which your posts usually do for me. Dave
The more I read this, the more I gained from it. Such an important truth. I need to read more of his writings.
